Food security is a very important aspect of the ministry of East End United.  We believe it is one answer to God’s call for justice for all people.  Nourish East End undertakes several programs to help alleviate food insecurity and social isolation that often goes hand in hand.

About Nourish East End

Nourish East End (formerly known as the Glen Rhodes Foodbank) has now expanded to include more partners and clients within our community! Our organization has been serving Toronto's East End for over 40 years, and we service more than 700 people in over 350 households. We offer weekly assistance to our clients through our in-person free food market.

Nourish East End opens its doors for an in-person free food market every Wednesday from 9am to 11:30am and 2pm to 4pm. We are located at 1470 Gerrard St E (one block west of Coxwell) and are near many transit stops (506 Streetcar and 22 Coxwell bus). Clients are able to shop from the selection of food we have available and can choose food items that work best for themselves and their families.

Any resident of Toronto can access our free food market. You can register on-site during market hours with government I.D. for self and household members, and proof of income; or online at Daily Bread portal. Once registered, clients only need to bring their Daily Bread registration number to access the market.

This program is made possible through the generous in-kind support of the Daily Bread, Second Harvest, Seaton’s Butcher, COBS Bread, Black Bird Bakery, Whole Food Market, The Black Pony, Victoria Whole Foods as well as Food Drives by schools, businesses and community groups contributing more than 350,000 lbs of food worth more than $600,000 every year.  We also benefit greatly from grants and financial donations provided by Daily Bread, Second Harvest, The Meeting House, UW, and private individuals, both big and small.

Our community Dinners are BACK!  After a hiatus since the onset of COVID, we have decided to restart our Free Monday Community Dinners on the fourth Monday of every month, starting Monday, September 26th, 2022 at 5pm.  We look forward to seeing our community come together, making connections and enjoying each other's company over a good meal once again.

While the pandemic may be (hopefully) winding down, the demand has not dissipated. With significant inflation of both rents and food in Toronto, our client base has swelled an additional 10% since January 1, 2022.

Our COVID Hamper program has come to an end. Our last hampers were delivered to our neighbours on Thursday, August 11th, 2022.  While starting with only 12 hampers, near the end of the program we were assembling more than 120 food hampers every single week, serving over 300 individuals impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.  We are so incredibly proud of our team and our various delivery partners that we worked with since the beginning of COVID.  While our delivery program has come to an end , our in-person service continues to serve all those that need access to free and nutritious food.  We look forward to seeing you.

We are fortunate to partner with community organizations that hold clinics at Nourish East End. Clinics are hosted at 1470 Gerrard Street East, either on the premises or in a mobile clinic at the front doors. For details on upcoming clinics follow us on social media by clicking the icons below for Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Covid-19

The Covid-19 pandemic has greatly exacerbated food insecurity within our city. As public health guidelines change and evolve, our goal is to provide relief and assistance to those impacted by the pandemic. As a response, Nourish East End has expanded our scope to include more volunteers, donors, and clients to meet the ever-changing needs of our community during this difficult time. For this reason, we offer both in-person and non-contact services to guarantee accessibility for all of our clients.

At this time, to ensure the safest environment for all of our clients and volunteers, anyone who accesses our facilities is required to wear a face mask and maintain social distancing. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.
